Scientific American Mind (Part 3)

Mine!: Passion for Possessions, by Bruce Hood, P56, Scientific American Mind, September/October 2011, Volume 22, Number 4, Scientific American, a division of Nature American inc, New York

tagline: Ownership of objects plays a critical role in human identity

‘in Western cultures, humans treat objects as extensions of themselves’

Why then is it so easy to throw away our possessions? Surely we have cultivated enough separation between objects and ourselves to discard them so easily. Or perhaps when we discard objects, we discard part of ourselves?
